Training Allowance
Interested in becoming a Paralympic athlete?
The VA National Veterans Sports Programs & Special Events Office provides a monthly assistance allowance for disabled Veterans as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 322(d) and Section 703 of the Veterans’ Benefits Improvement Act of 2008 for qualifying athletes training in Paralympic sports.

Through the program, VA will pay a monthly allowance to a Veteran with either a service-connected or non-service-connected disability if the Veteran meets the minimum military standards or higher (e.g., Emerging, Talent Pool, National Team) in his or her respective sport at a recognized competition. Besides making the military standard, an athlete must also be nationally or internationally classified by his or her respective sport federation as eligible for Paralympic competition within six or 12 months of a qualifying performance.

Athletes must also have established training and competition plans and are responsible for turning in monthly and quarterly reports in order to continue receiving the monthly assistance allowance. The allowance rate for an athlete approved for monetary assistance is the same as the 38 U.S.C. Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (VR&E) rate, which in FY 2013 ranged from $585.11 up to $1,104.64 per month, depending on the number of dependents.

2014 Star Spangled Salute Winner Announced

Congratulations to the winner of the 2014 Star Spangled Salute – Susan Kirsch of Washington!
We thank you for your service!

2014 Star Spangled Salute Winner Announced - Susan Kirsch

Susan Kirsch served in the Air Force and was one of roughly 2,000 disabled veterans who entered the Star Spangled Salute contest. Thanks to VMI and the Toyota Motor Corporation, she will be receiving a 2015 Toyota Northstar Access360 wheelchair van. Susan uses a power wheelchair and has a son that could also benefit from their new accessible van. She’s excited that her new van will simplify their many trips to and from the doctors that are necessary to their care.

The Star Spangled Salute is just one celebration in honor of VMI’s daily dedication to the men and women who have served. From its specialized team of Veteran Advocates and veteran financing, to special partnerships with the VA and beyond. Through reliable products and functional design, VMI’s fleet of mobility vehicles achieves independence and freedom for veterans, independent wheelchair users and their families.

“We are so fortunate to live in the United States and experience the freedoms so many like Susan Kirsch have served for,”  Doug Eaton,VMI’s CEO said. “Veterans Day and our Star Spangled Salute contest are amazing opportunities to honor our deserving veterans, but VMI is committed to empowering these incredible individuals and their loved ones every day of the year.”

“The buzz surrounding this year’s Star Spangled Salute contest has been exciting,” added Mark Oldenburg, Toyota’s National Fleet Marketing, Mobility and Strategic Planning Manager. “We’re honored to show our appreciation for those who’ve bravely served our country in the military with this program. I truly look forward to delivering a new Toyota Sienna with a VMI Northstar conversion to the winning veteran.”

Boston’s 5th Annual Wounded Vet Motorcycle Run

Boston’s Annual Wounded Vet Bike Run Inspired by Cpl. Vincent Mannion Brodeur began in 2011. One of the most severely wounded veterans in the nation, Vinnie is the recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. While serving in Iraq in 2007 with the 82nd Airborne, Vinnie was critically injured by an insurgents improvised explosive device. After surviving 40 operations and a year long coma Vincent has become an inspiration for people throughout the nation. All proceeds from Vinnie’s Run went to creating a handicapped accessible living space for Vinnie. Every year Boston’s Wounded Vet Run will be dedicated to different veterans. All proceeds raised go towards housing modifications to suite a comfortable living for the disabled veteran. Besides housing modifications, funds are also used to improve the quality of life of disabled veterans. Recreational needs, cars, and basic living needs are also other fields of charity the ride is dedicated to. The event is sponsored by the Italian-American War Veterans, a federally chartered non-profit veterans organization. They fought, and we ride, a bike run honoring the wounded veteran’s of New England.

New England Handicapped Sports Association

New England Handicapped Sports AssociationNEHSA is a group of people who pool their knowledge, skills and courage to participate in sports activities. Skiing remains the central sport because of its amazing adaptability to many types of disabilities.

NEHSA Goals — to sponsor and deliver outdoor recreational activities in a social atmosphere — Make it Fun!

New England Handicapped Sports Association (NEHSA) is a charitable organization [501(c) 3] located at Mount Sunapee Resort in Newbury, New Hampshire. Founded in 1972 as a weekend alpine ski program for people with physical disabilities, it serves those who want to enjoy active and independent lives through participation in sports. In the past 40 years it has grown to include a wide variety of physical, cognitive, and developmental disabilities. NEHSA also takes pride in welcoming our disabled Veterans home, whether it is for therapeutic reasons or for rest and relaxation. In addition to adaptive skiing, both stand-up skiing and sit skiing, NEHSA also provides services for adaptive snowboarding, cross-country skiing, kayaking, rowing, tubing and water skiing. The services for these sports include access to specialized adaptive equipment, access to highly skilled coaches, and individual instruction. Through these programs, NEHSA enables its clients to gain a sense of independence, a positive attitude, access to social opportunities, and personal growth through the challenges that sport and recreation present.

Anyone Can Learn to Ski/Snowboard — NEHSA offers adaptive alpine and cross-country ski and snowboard lessons to people of all ages and all disabilities. At Mount Sunapee Resort, where our home base and winter program reside, skiers participate in either a stand up or sit-down program, some people try both. Among our stand-up skiers are amputees, persons who have recovered from polio or strokes, skiers with cerebral palsy, blind skiers, deaf skiers, and persons with developmental disabilities. Participants in our sit-down program may include persons with spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, paraplegia and quadriplegia. Cross-country lessons are offered by NEHSA instructors at Eastman Cross-Country Center in Grantham NH.

Anyone Can Kayak/Paddle/Row – NEHSA’S summer program offers  the opportunity for people living with a disability to develop new skills, build physical strength, and enjoy the beautiful summer weather with family and friends.  Lessons are offered to all ages and all disabilities from June through September at Lake Sunapee State Beach.

No experience is necessary and NEHSA provides all the necessary equipment. The staff of summer volunteers train intensively all year to insure students’ safety and fun on the water. There are a number of instructors certified through the American Canoe Association (ACA) and the American Rowing Association. NEHSA partners with the Lake Sunapee Rowing Club to offer adaptive rowing opportunities.
